ATL                    HISTORY

H

At the Loerie was built in 1883 by Doctor Charles Gorman as a home with private rooms for both medical and surgical cases.

The building was designed by Henry William Dunn with builder/carpenter William Page of Knysna.

Having originally served as Knysna's first private hospital till about 1903 after which it was sold to Walter Williams.

In 1941 George Fechter Senior, master carpenter, my Oupa (Granddad) bought the property.

Letitia Fechter, George's wife, my Ouma (Granny) ran "Die Loerie" as a Boarding House.

Oupa  had his wood working factory across the yard where he designed and produced iconic ball and claw furniture from indigenous woods such as Outeniqua Yellow Wood, Stinkwood, Iron Wood etc.

In 2009 the property was acquired by Andre' and Roz Fechter (my Mom and Dad) who took on the daunting task of renovating an ageing historical building.

In 2017 the building was lovingly refurbished.

We opened our doors as "At The Loerie" in early 2018.

We welcome you to be a part of the next chapter in the life of this historic home.
